Big stomach

Question: I have a big stomach and over 50 years old and overweight. Should I focus on weight and then trimming the stomach? I find it difficult to get down on the ground because of a prior broken arm. What exercises can I do which I can coordinate overtime with reduction in eating so much?

Weight and wrist injury

Yes, the abdominals is one area that everyone wants to flatten, but they go about it the wrong way! You definitely have the right mindset – you need to lose weight first, before you can see significant reduction on your stomach area.

What you can do is engage yourself in walking, lots of walking every day at first especially if you have not exercised for a long time. If you feel worried that it might hurt your joints, you can try swimming as it doesn’t place much strain on your joints. Then progress to walking or another types of aerobic activities once you have built your strength and stamina.

In your other page, about weak hamstrings and lower back pain I also talked about proper nutrition.

So in case, you don’t want to keep bouncing back and forth different pages, I’ll highlight them again here.

  • Have more meals in a day, maybe 5-6 smaller sized meals.
  • Make sure your meals are packed with loads of protein, fibre, some carbs and be sure to drink loads of water.
  • Avoid sweet stuff, oily and fatty foods.

With this nutrition that you have in mind, you can be sure that you will have a better form of weight loss progress than most other people who embark on silly, fast diets that don’t work, or only deliver results in a short period of time.

Then, you can slowly incorporate exercises into your routine. I once had a wrist injury too, so I know your frustration, what you can do is maybe do one push up a day, then slowly build up the number of repetitions.

Injuries like bone fractures only go away after you actually work it. It might sound insane or even impossible, but if you embark on this journey and understand that it will take time, you will achieve results. You need to put in hard work but once you have lost weight and improved your strength, the hours of hard work will seem like the best investment in your life!
