Bad acne general information

Understanding the root cause of a problem is the best way to treat it. Bad acne starts just under the skin, in the hair follicle pores. There are many myths out there suggesting that acne is caused by eating chocolate, greasy food, and some that even suggest masturbation leads to acne. You can discount all these myths right now because there is no research to support these outrageous claims.

Bad acne starts with the excessive production of oil in our skins’ glands.  Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands that lie just beneath the skin. Sebum is the oily substance that comes out when you squeeze a pimple to its breaking point. Men actually tend to overproduce sebum much more due to their levels of testosterone, and it’s why you see some men with acne all the way into their 40’s.

Different people suffer from differing amounts of acne. Someone who has a few pimples here and there, can be said to be suffering from mild acne. Someone with breakouts happening a few times a week, and having acne covering a significant part of their face will be suffering from bad acne.  The biggest concern with bad acne is the risk of acne scars.

When dirt and oil clog a pore, P. Acne bacteria are given an opportunity to thrive in an anaerobic environment. Acne is essentially an infection of a pore that leads to clogging, inflammation and discoloration of the pore in some cases (i.e. Whiteheads,  Blackheads, Papules, & Pastules.). Blackheads are follicles that are filled with sebum and dead skin cells that have undergone oxidation resulting in darker melanin. Whiteheads are for the most part the same, except that air cannot reach the follicle and cannot become oxidized leaving the area white.

Papules happen when the pore wall breaks allowing white blood cells to enter and the pore becomes inflamed. Pustules, or Zits and Pimples, as they are commonly referred to, are the result of the white blood cells from papules making their way to the skin’s surface.  Bad acne is essentially a mass amount of clogged and/or inflamed pores.
